National Peanut Butter Day

On 24th January it's National Peanut Butter Day, which honors the staple of American cuisine.  This delicious source of protein that became a culinary treat was first created by the Aztecs and Inca peoples in 1000 BC. But the paste they made wasn't nearly as creamy as the smooth peanut butter of today.

It wasn't until the 20th century that we would get the right texture and the food product was sold to the masses. Today, many people across the US enjoy their favorite peanut butter recipes including the likes of peanut butter cookies and peanut butter sandwiches.

The Delicious History of Peanut Butter

The Aztec and Inca peoples are often credited as the first creators of peanut butter. Through the ages, the making of peanut butter traveled up to America where it gets a little complicated. New Yorker Rose Davis is said to have made peanut butter in the 1840s inspired by her son, who told her about the nutty paste he had tried in Cuba.

Others trace the peanut butter we know today back to three different patents by three different men. Marcellus Edson, who filed a patent for "peanut paste" in 1884, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, who patented the process of using raw peanuts for the beloved spread in 1895, and Dr. Ambrose Straub, who invented the peanut-butter-making machine in 1903.
