What to Know about Tibet Independence Day
Tibet Independence Day commemorates the beginning of the Tibetan national uprising against Chinese rule in 1959. Since then the Tibetan independence movement has been protesting every year on 13 February to mark the anniversary of the five-point proclamation that was issued by the 13th Dalai Lama.
The independence movement is mainly led by the Tibetan diaspora located in countries like India and the United States. Tibetan activists highlight the struggle for freedom and their protests are often accompanied by a statement from the Dalai Lama.
