The History of Gambia Independence Day

On 18th February, the West African country of Gambia commemorates its independence from British rule gained in 1965. On this public holiday, the people of Gambia also remember that they were the last colony. Looking back at 300 years of colonial rule, Gambia was part of the Portuguese empire under French rule before becoming one of many British colonies in 1765.

An agreement between the British and the Gambian government in 1964 eventually led to its independence as a constitutional monarchy. The People's Progressive Party leader David Jawara became the first prime minister while Queen Elizabeth II is represented by a governor-general.
