Learn More about Ghana Independence Day
Ghana, formerly known as the Gold Coast, gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1957. It was the first country south of the Sahara to do so. The independence movement was led by Kwame Nkrumah, who became the first Prime Minister and later President.
The people of Ghana have a great love for music and local artists like E.T. Mensah and Agya Koo Nimo created the genre of Highrise. Walking through the streets, you might also get to hear Kologo music. On 6th March, Ghanians celebrated their independence by singing and playing the anthem ‘Ghana Freedom’. There are carnivals and parades and families gather to enjoy food and drink together.
