How Purim is Celebrated
Purim is a Jewish holiday that commemorates the survival of the Jews, who were marked for death by their Persian rulers in the 5th century BCE as recorded in the Book of Esther. The word Purim comes from the Persian word for "lots" and refers to the lottery that the antagonist in the Jewish scripture called Haman used to choose the date for the massacre of the Jewish people that was prevented by Queen Esther and Mordecai.
Today Jewish community observes the day by listening to the public reading of the Book of Esther in the synagogue in the evening and on the following morning. A festive meal and sending gifts of food to friends are also part of the celebration while the holiday is preceded by a minor fast of three days.
